A new day is dawning

After nearly six months of laying here dormant I have decided to to reinstate this little corner of the interwebs. For one reason or another Rhianna Writes just hasn't taken off like I expected it too. I had expected that I was going to be writing more fiction but that just hasn't happened.

I am still not really sure what is going to happen I just know that having this space back is a move in the right direction.

Thankful to be back

From the moment I knew Thankful Thursday would once again be calling A Parenting Life home I started mentally going through all the things the different things I wanted to share my thanks for. Of course now that I am actually sitting down to write my post my mind is of course somewhat blank.

To say today (which is Wednesday) has been a long day is somewhat of an understatement.

Monday saw us picking up the keys to our new home. A lovely 4x2 in a newish estate about fifteen minutes from the heart of Bunbury. Only Monday also so Mr Awesome have the opportunity for a day of casual labour, for which I am very thankful, so any moving of our things had to be done by yours truly. Thankfully Lovely is a rather strong young lass so with her assistance we were able to get a few things moved over. Mr A finished work earlier than expected which meant we were able to do another trailer load of moving.

It is crazy to think that in less than two weeks we were able to come up with enough furniture to completely furnish our house. All for an incredibly reasonable price as well I might add. I am so thankful that people are willing to sell their unwanted goods at such reasonable prices.

Tuesday saw the girls and I making a few more runs to our new house, while Mr A made the most of the opportunity to work a little. We were able to successful assemble Teapots bed. Sadly however Zany’s proved to be a little more complex. So complex that we had to take it apart and start again not once but twice and still failed to work it out. Thankfully we decided to walk away from it and wait till Mr A was around to lend a hand.

Which brings us to today. Well today for me as I am writing, but yesterday for you reading. Today (Wednesday) was all about cleaning the farm house we were house sitting and gathering the last of stuff to take to our new home.

I am so thankful we were able to spend the last week inside a house rather than in Edna because it has been all kinds of crazy wet and cold here in the South West. Of course having to clean baths and toilets and vacuum floors was not exactly the most pleasurable of activities but I guess they are all things I need to come to terms with as we return to the land of normal living.

Sigh.

Never mind though. I am sure there are women out there that would be thankful to have a house and even a bath and toilet for that matter to clean. I must admit this will be the first bath I have had in my home for nearly ten years.

Other things I am thankful for this week include

  • Mr A having a job interview for more permanent work. Of course my thanks will multiply ten fold if the interview goes well.
  • Beautiful friends to spend time with, who also happen to be great at catching crabs and getting marron, which just so happen to be some of my most favourite foods.
  • The most gorgeous birthday present from my little brother.

  • Having enough internet and time to regularly blog
  • Generous strangers who gave us more warm wool blankets than I could hope for.
  • A most wonderful daughter who this week turns fourteen.
Now you!

Thankful for my time as host

Thankful Thursday with A Parenting Life Johnny and Kenny are taking turns at singing their soul soothing songs in the background. It feels like forever since I have heard nothing but their gentle voices. They have the most amazing way of calming and centring my inner being. Everything currently feels right with the world regardless of what reality really says.

For eight wonderful months now I have had the pleasure of hosting Thankful Thursday. As I mentioned in my first post as host it in so many ways feels like a dream come true.

I have been sharing my gratitude in one shape or form on this blog this 2011, which was pretty much about the same time that I started to blog on a regular basis. I do honestly believe that taking the time to look for things to be thankful for makes you a happier person.

Next month our lives are going to be turned upside down. In a good way mind you. In fact in a we have been hoping and planning for this for quite some time kind of way actually. We will finally be hitting the road and beginning #ouradventureofalifetime. Where we pack up all our worldly possessions jump in the car and drive off into the sunset to explore this great land of ours. An opportunity I am all kinds of thankful for.

However since we plan on heading to some of the more remote areas this country has to offer there is a relatively large chance that there will be many an occasion where we don't have internet coverage. Which as you can imagine would make hosting a weekly link up rather tricky. Especially if you are a last minute Lucy such as myself and rarely have post written and scheduled in advance.

So this will be my last week of hosting Thankful Thursday.

I know that I am still in the land of internet for at least the next month but there is just so much that still needs to be done I am trying to relieve myself of as many pressures as possible. Not that hosting is a pressure, but I don't like not making it round to all those who join in and I just know computer time is going to limited while we do the final packing and preparing.

Never fear though I have found a fabulous new host who will be taking over as of next week.

She is a fellow blogger and regular thanker that has truly embraced the art of being thankful and I just know she will be a fantastic host. Though you are going to have to click the link to find out who she is! I am so thankful that she agreed to take this on.

So what else am I thankful for this week?

- being given an extension for my assignment
- my mum having Teapot so I can have some chance of actually getting my assignment done
- all the beautiful comments left on my whingey whiney post the other day
- being able to book Zany a birthday party at a play centre with only a week's notice
- finding a brand new only used for a few hours little Macbook Air on Gumtree at a brilliant price
- having the money to get said Macbook
- Mr Awesome helping out with the cooking and cleaning as much as he does
- coffee
- having a few days off work
- all the beautiful bloggers that each week joined in with this little old linky and made me feel all kinds of special

Now you,

and don't forget to head here next week to share your thanks

A blogging conundrum

Given my looming assignment deadline, working most nights and the expectation people have of a clean house and food regularly put on the table, not to mention clean clothes and what have you, I wasn't expecting to actually sit down and write a post for IBOT this week. Only when I came home from work and discovered two children not sleeping like they were supposed to be, blogging seemed like the only sensible way to deal with the situation so here I am.

The alternative was to give into their demands or rather hopes and snuggle up next to them and drift off to the land of nod with them. Which while sounds rather pleasant and appealing it is not nearly as wonderful as actually drifting in the comfort of my own bed.

Thanks to the joys of being a laptop owner I was able to sit on the end of the bed while they drifted off to sleep and try and tap out a few words of wisdom to share with you all. Naturally though those words failed me and I found myself heading towards Candy Crush in a bit to pass whatever elusive level I am currently stuck on.

By the time all children were finally sleeping though I had become so attached to the idea of actually blogging I just had to sit and give it another go.

Which is where I am now.

Desperately wanting to try and say something but not entirely sure of what that something is.

Due to my overwhelming feeling of commitments and a serious lack of hours in a day I have not been pulling my weight in terms of being a good blogger. And by being a good blogger I mean sharing all the comment love that makes blogging the awesome past time that it is.

In fact I am yet to even leave a comment on the wonderful thankers who joined in Thankful Thursday last week. Which makes me all kinds of sad. (I promise I will get there very soon ladies, I have read them all just not left a note to say so.)

All of this has left me wondering if I really should be spending this time right now writing away. Aside from all the other things I should be doing in real life there feels like a gazillion things I should be doing in the blogosphere as well before I let myself have the privilege of writing a post. If I don't have the time to read and comment do I really have the right to write?

But the thing is...

...there is a part of me that just has to drop everything and write.

It is almost as if the only way my brain is able to take stock of all that is before me, is if I stop and ramble on a bit here first. It is like a downloading of clarity if you will.

As a wise woman and friend pointed out to me I always have the right to write, we all do. However it is the right to link up and join in the community that is questionable.

Actually she never said the last bit but I felt it was implied and feel it to be quite true as well.

But the other thing is...

...as much as I need to just write I also need to feel that at least a few people have read whatever I have written and without linking up and joining a community that often never happens.

Oh the conundrums of being a blogger.

Ironically in a bid to seek some answers I am joining in with Jess for #IBOT.

So tell me how you feel about reading, writing and joining in with links

Everyone Else is Normal, right?

Hello, hello, hello all the way from St Albans, in the heart of South East England, one trillion miles away from Australia, yet so close in many respects…. It’s wonderful to be given the chance to pop in on this fantastic blog, to chat to you, Rhianna’s blog followers. I hope you don’t mind me dropping by.

Siobhan is my name, I’m half-Irish-English, and I’m married to a laid back, bare footed Aussie, from Perth I might add, who came to England 20 years ago to meet his erstwhile father. He found a wife in the process. We then went on to produce a girl who’s nearly 10 and a boy who’s 7. They rarely cease to both delight and infuriate me, usually the former thankfully.

I started this all-consuming, addictive hobby called blogging about 2 years ago, spurred on by a burning desire to write and hounded by a terrible boredom bordering on depression 7 years after I became a parent and a Stay at Home Mum. You see I used to do the total opposite for a job – travel around the world, write intelligent sounding policy papers for World Vision to inform MPs of the dreadful situations going on in Rwanda or Palestine, and generally do the opposite of my parenting job.

Not that I didn’t love becoming a mum in many respects (aside from the exhaustion, lack of reading time and general self-sacrifice) but it was quite a shock.

The name of my blog, Everyone Else is Normal, has either made you laugh out loud, smile wryly, or protest that that’s rubbish. If you did the first two, that was my intention. If the latter, good, I got a reaction and you’re right – it is rubbish.

No one else is normal.

But as humans we have this annoying habit. It's comparing ourselves to others.
Something to do with a deep insecurity in humans that everyone else is probably doing better than ourselves.

And when we became parents – oh Lord! – any insecurities and lack of confidence we have is magnified several times over. It's a potent mix of our inexperience as parents, our pride, and our desire to do the better-than-best for our child.

Like I said, I live in St Albans, an historic Roman town steeped in both history and parents. It’s the place where Britain’s first Christian martyr was beheaded for his faith, and we have a super great big cathedral to honour that. Being only 20 mins train ride north of central London in what they call the Green Belt (a wonderful post war planning law to stop the inexorable spread of London) and full of excellent schools, it’s a magnate for professionals wanting to start up a family. Like my parents did 45 years ago.

As a result, its an area that suffers from a classic case of what I call comparative and sometimes competitive parenting: the general over-worrying about our kids’ education, health, accumulation of toys, birthday party protocols and general slight neuroses about whether we’re spending enough time with them or whether they’re spending too much time on their ipads….
I’m not selling my town well am I?!. It’s actually a fantastic, vibrant town full of interesting, warm people, with interesting jobs, a good dollop of culture, music and pubs - we have one for each day of the year I think (I can hear the stampede to move here!). Most people do have jobs but people work long hours, have huge mortgages to pay and the cost of living keeps increasing. But those of us with jobs live very privileged lives in comparison to the increasing number who can’t even feed their kids (my church runs a foodbank, which has become increasingly in demand over the last 2 years).

My theories on why we live in a comparative parenting age was the very first thing I blogged about in The Culture of Comparison, but my main reason for blogging (after writing) is to most definitely to encourage others. Like Rhianna, I see it as so important to look for the positive, to embrace the seasons of life and to laugh at the tough or mundane things. I love her Thankful Thursday linky. A UK blogger, Mummy from the Heart, has something similar called Reasons to be Cheerful which I join in on sometimes.

Parenting is so tough at times, we need to encourage each other and be as honest as we can (without sacrificing our kids’ privacy) if we’re to banish this myth that Everyone Else is Normal. We are Good Enough Mums.

My blog is where I write about this and other rambling thoughts on family life in the UK by sharing the joy, exhaustion, hilarity, bickering, cooking & cleaning, explaining, tidying away, laughing, worrying, encouraging, decision-making, writing of cheques and....learning to let go, that has been my parenting journey.

I also use it as a place to post photos (a great way to see the beauty in every day life, and share Things I Discovered each month:

little gems I’ve found to buy, cook, read, do, make or visit that kids or their parents love and that make life that little bit easier. It’s a linky so come by at the end of each month and join in. I didn’t get to write one this month as I’ve started working from home recently, editing a book, so the blog sometimes has to take second place….

So, if you have the time (what’s that?) or the inclination, drop by sometime to share in the funny and the poignant, the rubbish and rough, but mostly to remind ourselves that no one is sorted or entirely ‘normal’, whatever that is, and to resist the temptation to think ‘everyone else is normal’...

So what’s a parenting life in Australia like? Similar in many ways I know, but not all. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Visit me at www.everyoneelseisnormal.com, tweet me @notsonormalmum or email me at Siobhan@calthrop.com

Blog Everyday In May with Clairy Hewitt - Day One

In some ways full of nothing, in others overflowing, that's the best way to describe today.
Lots of time at home chatting and just hanging with Lovely.
Some blog reading, commenting and sharing, after all it is Thankful Thursday.
A few hours at work, not overly busy but filled with laughter and giggles.
Home again home again jiggity jig, to sit and talk of plans that are big.
Some late night reading of my favourite blogs, led to a challenge I just couldn't turn down.
To blog every day in the month of May with the ever so lovely Clairey Hewitt.

The first prompt for Clairey's challenge was to describe your day in 100 words.
I was beyond surprised when I checked my count and came in at exactly 100

I must confess I was a terrible linky host last week

My Home Truths
As you are probably well aware on Thursdays I host a little linky called Thankful Thursday. Taking it on has been one of my bloggy dreams come true.

I love that it encourages people to stop and think about what they have to be thankful for. Actually I love that it makes me stop and think what I am thankful for as well. Some days are much easier than others and it is the harder days to find thanks that I am generally the most grateful to have made myself stop and think about it.

It is kinda like stopping to smell the roses I guess. Even when there aren't necessarily any to be smelt.

image found here

As there are generally only a handful of bloggers that join in I am able to go and read each and every one of them. I also tend to tweet the links and then pin them to a Pinterest Thankful Thursday board. I was sharing on Google as well but due to me not having a Google button on my web browser and not enough people having a Google share button on their posts I stopped.

Last week however I must confess I didn't do any of that.

In fact it wasn't until very late on Sunday night that I even got around to commenting on the posts that had joined in. Which makes me feel all kinds of bad I can tell you.

I mean if bloggers can go to the trouble of writing a post about their thanks and then linking it up the very least I can do is have a read and leave a comment isn't it? After all the other thing I love about hosting Thankful Thursday is the community that it is creating. And we all know blog communities are only created by sharing lots of comment love.

Between going to the dentist, working and then the poor old dog, I just couldn't make the time to sit at the computer. Much to my disappointment I assure you. And while I know that chances are everyone is completely understanding of all of this I still needed to get it off my chest so to speak.

So there you have it. A terrible blog host I was. And with two weeks of full time work kicking off today I am not sure this week will be much better. Fingers and toes crossed that children go to bed nice and early Thursday night and I can do it then.

Got something you need to get off your chest? Join in here Well at least for this week while the lovely Kirsty puts her feet up and takes care of herself xx

Those rascally gremlins!!!

If you are a regular reader of A Parenting Life, you probably (hopefully) would have noticed that something on this little old blog seems to have gone a little awry over the last few days. If you are one of my lovely likers over on Facebook chances are you would have seen me having a bit of a whinge about the said frustrations I have been experiencing.

there is always hope at the end of a rainbow

For the most part I wasn't overly concerned I thought that somehow it would all just fix itself. You know on account of it breaking all by itself and all. Apparently though that is not quite how things work.

A very kind blogger had offered to have a squizz at it for me but I haven't had a chance to accept and let her in. And I liked to think that if I went looking for the problem I would be able to work it out. Tonight, many hours ago, I finally gave myself permission to have a look at it.

Eventually I *think* I may have got a few steps closer to finding the answer.

It appears as if the problem is linked to the InLinkz tool that I used in my Thankful Thursday post. Which is so so incredibly sucky because there were ten, yes 10!! awesome bloggers that joined in. I think that is nearly a record.

For now I have reverted that post to a draft. I am going to try and see if there is any way round it but who knows what that way may be. So in the meantime please bare with me and if you happen to be a Blogger whiz any suggestions?

The top things I have known this year

So here we are on the very last Friday of the year.

I know that I have said it before but by golly I will say it again as well. How did the time fly past so fast?

I know that the regular host for Things I Know, Miss Cinders, is off enjoying time with her family but the opportunity to blog presented itself so here I am.

I know that through out the year I have written a total of thirty Things I Know posts. Some have joined in with other linkies like FFS with Dear Baby G and FYBF with With Some Grace. Others have been where I myself was the hostess with the mostess. Which just quietly I loved and thanks for all the support from those that joined in.

I know that out of the thirty TIK posts for the year these five were the ones that were read the most.

I know that for the most part I am pretty happy with that list. Sometimes when I make these lists or look at this type of thing I cringe because the posts involved are (only in my eyes) not worthy of being there.

I know that I am working on being less critical of myself.

I know I am going to join in with some blog flogging over at With Some Grace

I must confess my favourite posts

image from here with thanks
The eve of Christmas Eve and somehow in amongst the craziness of all that needs to be done I feel I have the time to sit and blog. Well of course I do. I wouldn't be a procrastinator or blogger if I didn't see the height of busyness as the prime to sit down and belt out some words of wisdom otherwise. Aside from that it is the last confession of the year over at My Home Truths and there is no denying it has been one of my most favourite link ups this year.

Now the prompt for this week was your favourite post. Which is nice and easy if of course you are in a position to actually be able to choose your favourite post. I am sure it surprises no one that I am unable to complete such a seemingly simple feat. I don't think I can even narrow it down to a top five.

Much to my surprise I only have fifteen posts tagged under Confessions. I thought that there would have been many more than that and maybe there are and I was just a slack tagger. Which while hard to believe is quite possible. Sometimes the whole tagging of posts go by the wayside, much like most things in my life at times I guess, but I am starting to digress.

Rather than face the impossible and select an actual favourite post I have decided to give you the most read confessional post here on this little old blog of mine.

The first of which is from way back in June and was a double up post that saw me confessing and blogging on a Tuesday. Not that the title actually gives much away but it is all about toilet cleaning and who does it at The Shoebox.

Quite fittingly the next most read confession of the year is when Kirsty ran away for a week and left me in charge. I was all kinds of excited I can tell you. Especially when eleven rather awesome bloggers came along and joined in. No wonder I struggled to pick just one blog that I loved that week!

The next post on the list is a little more recent and is where I share my confessions to a seemingly perfect weekend. A post which another fellow blogger had asked me to share months prior to me actually getting around to it.

Number four on the most read confessions is from way back in March where I confessed I was totally unable to stay away from linking up to other blogs for week.

And last but not least, number five on the most read confessions posts is one where I confess to  being all kinds of crazy. Which probably came as a total surprise to no one.

One thing I must say I have noticed as I look back through all these old posts its that I am a terrible comment responder. Like really really terrible. And for that I am truly sorry. I didn't actually realise I was as slack at it as what these posts make me appear to be.

Anyway there you have it. My top confession posts for 2013.

Thanks so much to the ever lovely Kirsty (who I invariably want to call Kristy all the time) for being the hostess with the mostess when it comes to confessing. Since this post could loosely be considered a list I am also going to join in with Listmania over at Hopeful Rae of Sunshine because she is awesome.
