Some times when you least expect it, reality comes and long and well and and truly bites you on the behind. For me one of those times came along today.
As you may recall me mentioning before, come July we are off on the adventure of a life time. We are packing all we can into the back of our car and hitting the open road. Mind you such an experience is not exactly free of charge and money is in short supply.
All of which means it wouldn't hurt for me to see if I could get myself a job of some description. Having been gainfully removed from the official workforce for nearly nine years I am slightly nervous about it all.
The other day while down and the local shopping centre I noticed the video store had a position available poster in the front window. I couldn't help but feel that was for me. Sure it said it required some mornings but my dear mother doesn't have much on these days I am sure she wouldn't mind having Teapot tag along with her while I went off and earned some cold hard cash.
Today I finally managed to get the gumption up to actually sit down and have a look at creating some sort of a current resume. In amongst the last lot of decluttering that I undertook I happened to come across my last resume. It didn't have a date on it however the current address was of one I haven't lived at for nearly nine years.
Despite it's age though, that nearly decade old resume was in fact the one that I used to get my very last job with. The position was as a marketing manager with a real estate company, in case you were wondering. I quite liked it though settling into the whole nine to five routine was rather tricky for me.
Prior to the real estate gig I had run a small motel that had involved living on site for a while. The hours were long and varied and anything but nine to five. Being confined to an office for all those hours was also an adjustment I struggled with. Till then all my jobs so me constantly interact with lots of different people. But I've digressed.
Sitting here typing out a new and reviewed resume in the hope that I may be able to score a job somewhere doing something (I really am not too fussed on either just let me choose the hours that suit me best) I the horrible realisation of being incredibly old.
Ok perhaps incredibly old is rather drastic for the tender age of thirty five-nearly-six but wait till you hear this.
I had to write dates from last century.
My first job, which I wanted to include because it demonstrates I am a long term employee, was from 1992-1998. In a surf shop that no longer exists. The fact I have only had five other jobs was the other reason I thought I could get away with stepping that far back in time. Something which I am now reconsidering.

Done any thing to make you feel old lately?
Has reality slapped you one across the face?
How many jobs should I list on a resume?
In fact what should I put on my resume?
And why isn't there someone out there ready to just give me a job doing what I want?
So many questions for today's IBOT post
I could well imagine you would have many valuable skills and experiences you could lend to an employer, build these up and put the jobs that back these skills up. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteMy cracked dry feet are making me feel old at the moment, what I wouldn't give for the feet of a 21 year old!
yes I am sure I have lots of valuable skills and experiences as well it is just trying how best to display that on paper I guess. I hear you on the feet thing as well. On a hot night my favourite thing to do is sit there with my feet in a bucker of cold water. Pure bliss
DeleteI agree with Alicia - include the jobs that highlight your skills the best and GOOD LUCK !
ReplyDeleteWishing you every success in finding a suitable job (btw - don't mention that you will be leaving in July !!!)
Have the best day !
Me
No I wasn't going to mention the leaving thing. Though really I am only after something casual or temp
DeleteI don't think I'd go back that far. Typically you want to only list relevant experience. Have a look on careerone.com.au, they have lots of great tips for resume building etc. I also think sometimes in situations like the video shop, popping by in person and asking if they have an application form or just introducing yourself and saying you're interested sometimes holds far more weight than a resume. Best of luck to you Rhi! It is hard work getting a job!! xo
ReplyDeleteYes it does sound a long way back doesn't it but was with the one company for nearly seven years and I worked my way up to the top. The video shop had a poster in their window asking for resumes which is what prompted me to put one together. Possibly should have gotten round to it a little earlier though!
DeleteWishing you lots of luck with the job hunt Rhianna. Like Aroha said speaking to people in person can make all the difference there are times when you have to be pushy even when it goes against your nature. You obviously have great skills to offer you just need to find someone who is willing to give you a chance. That was what I found when looking for work. Look me up if you come to Perth on your travels :)
ReplyDeletethanks Sarah, I know if I just put myself out there something will appear. And yes will definitely look you up. Mr Awesome doesn't know it yet but the trip will be a blog meet up hop where I can meet all the bloggers I love!
DeleteTrust me at 35 you are YOUNG!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the job hunting - it's daunting when you've been out of it a while, but you sound multi-talented, so go for it with deserving confidence... :)
Yes I know 35 is not old at all. The job hunting is a bit daunting but I will put my big girl pants on and get on with it. Tomorrow. Maybe.
DeleteI only put my last few jobs on my resume. I would just pop into the store with your resume and have a chat. Goodluck, I am at the same stage as you too!
ReplyDeleteWell I haven't really had many jobs and my first job was for a very long time and very varied with the skills and positions so it kinda needs to go on. Wishing you lots of luck as well
Deleteyou and I should get together for a chat. I will be doing exactly this in 3 weeks. After a loooong break. As to feeling old, I feel old all the time. The last one was a rally raider said he was born in 1990 and I flipped out. How is that a 24 year old?? It was like yesterday!
ReplyDeleteyes we should definitely Lydia! Wishing you well in your quest as well. And yes I am sure 1990 wasn't that long ago!
DeleteGood luck with job! Only list a few and it's not necessary to go all the way back. It is such a miserable task, resume writing and building, but it will pay off when you land the job. :) #IBOT
ReplyDeleteThanks lovely, I hope it is not as terrible as I expect
DeleteLast century, that's funny! We are pretty lucky to live through two centuries - we have seen the last of the handmade and analogue and the birth of the electric and digital, we have seen how things used to be, how they are and where they are going, we are blessed. Have you seen that meme that says "When people say 10 years ago I think of the 90's not 2004" - that's me.
ReplyDeleteJust trust the fact the right job will find you, all you have to do is put yourself out there - break a leg!
I know it is a bit funny isn't it? The changes we have seen are absolutely amazing. I have seen that meme and it is me too!
DeleteCan you make mother and homemaker sound super professional, use some fancy words and throw that in too!! Haha. Executive Officer of the Homebase. Good at delegation, motivation and multitasking!! ha! Karen x
ReplyDeleteYes I was thinking of all the skills I used as a parent and how to include them!
DeleteApplying for a new job is tough, no matter how long between jobs, how fancy and up to date your resume is, it is hard and wrecks havoc on your nerves. Good luck! Just let the awesome person you are shine through xx
ReplyDeleteI always start out by writing out a full resume, then removing jobs & refocusing the relevant skills to each job. Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks Vanessa, there will be many a rewrites I think!
DeleteGood luck and aim higher, I think you may undervalue yourself. I started back at work after 16 years out of the workforce raising a family, started in merchandising then moved onto sales, then retrained my self and am now a trainer and assessor, and now specialising in one area. Have doubts that I am now going to be too old, but you know what, I am going to have a go and re-educate myself again by undertaking a Grad Cert. At this stage of my life you are doing it for yourself, what a luxury. Rae xxxx
ReplyDeleteGood on you Rae sounds like a great path for you. Thank you for your kind words.
DeleteOh I didn't know you were travelling Oz soon - good on you! We did it in 2001 when our munchkins were 7 and 4 turning 5, for 6 whole months - best thing EVER. The kids still talk about it today (you can even sneak a peek at some piccies here: http://www.middleagedmama.com.au/caravanning-around-australia/). We put our possessions in storage, rented out our house (it paid the bills) and off we went. Hubby had about half of the time as paid leave, the other half unpaid and we managed okay - it's amazing how little you need to live on when living in a caravan. We did lots of free camping too. Look forward to hearing more - and all the best with the job hunting. As for feeling old, well it's now over 25 years since I was a teacher - where have all the years gone?!
ReplyDeleteYes that is what we will be doing as well Janet, so exciting! And gosh where have those years gone?
DeleteGood luck with the job hunting and resume writing. I wouldn't even know what to write in mine because the only jobs I've had were a barmaid and a check out chick!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tegan!
DeleteI've just gone through the process of writing my resume and looking for work. It was daunting, even though I'd only been out of the work force for 2.5 years.
ReplyDeleteThe first 9 jobs I applied for I didn't even get an interview :( Then the next one - I got an interview and the job!
So now I stand of the threshold of having to start work again - and that's a bit scary too.
Hope your job hunting soon brings wonderful success
xx
Congratulations on the job! It is all a bit daunting, I don't even know how I will be able to fit working in but apparently it has to be done
DeleteFar out that is ages ago!! I was still in high school. For that entire time!
ReplyDeleteI got Boatman to write mine. I don't even know what he put on in terms of jobs, but he did mention the blog and the book. Blogging is a commitment and shows skills. You just have to hope the person likes your stuff!
Yes I mentioned the blog as well, and my involvement with the school council as that saw me use some pretty amazing skills (even if I do say so myself)
DeleteYou know it's all about how you come across when you meet people I reckon. It can be hard to express how great you are on a piece of paper! I can't believe July is so close, are they plans for a few years, months? Why didn't I realise this? I am naughty for not registering this earlier. Sorry. And you can't be hold as I am the same age, give or take a week!!!! xx
ReplyDeleteYes I don't think a piece of paper can really do me justice either! I haven't spoken too much about the trip so don't feel too bad about not knowing too much! And yes, your are right we can't really be old can we?
