Do you do doctors?

Source
This morning I put up a Facebook update moaning about the troubles in my day despite it not yet having reached 8.30am. Seriously it was very woe is poor hard done by me kind of post. Which is not really what I like to do because rainbows, sunshine and happiness are more my cup of tea. Plus I am always conscious of the fact that there are people out there with real problems rather.

In case you missed it, and I am sure you did because essentially Facebook hates me and barely shares my posts with anyone, (which is actually a whole separate post of its own) it went a little like this.

Miss Six has had a bit of a cough for days now, perhaps even weeks. My concept of time is not exactly that great. For the most part she seems quite ok. Her energy levels are not really lacking and she will still quite happily play argue interact with her sisters.

However out of no where she will just start coughing and sound like she is about to loose a lung. Perhaps even two. I am sure there are life long smokers out there that could not match her efforts of late.

My heart of hearts keeps telling me that it is related to the weather and the ridiculously cold air conditioning at school. It is not exactly the first time she has been like this, just this time it seems to be dragging on a bit longer than usual.

Last night as I was tucking Miss Six into bed, she asked me if perhaps she should go to a doctor to see if they could help her get better. It kinda broke my heart. It wasn't so much the need to go to the doctor that saddened me, more so that Miss Six no longer felt she had it in her to make herself well.

For as long as I can remember I have been a big believer in trusting your body. Listening to when it tells you to eat, rest and all that jazz. Naturally it is something I am trying to pass on to the girls as well. Being in tune with your body and understanding what it is trying to say is in my eyes a wonderful gift.

So when Miss Six (or any of them for that matter) tells me that they think they can only get better with the help of a doctor I am torn.

There is no doubt in my mind of the importance of doctors. None what so ever. Modern medicine has done some pretty amazing things and does a great job at making the world a better and healthier place. There is no denying without the wonders of medicine many lives would have been lost.

However. There is a part of me that thinks antibiotics are handed out a bit too willy nilly for my liking. Which is one of the reasons I don't really do doctors all that often. The other being we don't actually get sick enough all that often to warrant a trip to the doctor.

Anyway off to the doctor we went today. And away we walked with possibly of a very mild infection or perhaps something a little more viral, he couldn't really say. Either way he happily wrote out a script for antibiotics, complete with a repeat. I am just happy he bulk bills.

When did you last visit a doctor?

  1. I am very much like you, I hate going to the doctor. I am there with my kids when I think it is serious enough though, which isn't very often :)

  2. I hate the doctors so much, I've been once in about ten years! And that was for an ear infection which I knew I wasnt going to be able to get rid of on my own. I usually think that most minor illnesses will go on their own and theres not much a doctor can do but obviously its different with children, I feel sorry for her hearing about that cough I've had some terrible coughs in my time that have taken ages to go. Hope she gets well soon! :) x

    1. Thanks for your kind words Stacey. And go you for not needing a doctor. I wouldn't say that I hate them, because I have the utmost respect for them. I strongly believe that they are essential members of the community.

  3. We live at the Doctors - in fact we are there so much we could move in. I go with the kids for almost anything, but for me it has to be something really big. That said, we have the BEST dr. He's thorough but not alarmist, and for me, he knows what I'll do and won't do (I'm an annoying patient but he's try to coax me to meet him halfway).
And he never makes me feel stupid even when I know I am being stupid. (I made him separate all the vaccines so it took about 6 months of visits to get them done (with child number 2) and he pretended it wasn't me being crazy...

    1. I am sorry to hear that you live at the doctors but pleased you have one you love so much. I think if I had one that I loved and trusted perhaps it would be a whole different story. Oh and the vaccine thing, certainly not crazy, I have done similar as well. Fairy wishes and butterfly kisses to you lovely

  4. Doctors are also our last resort, I can't believe how they start writing a script before you've even finished telling them what's wrong!
Definitely listen to your body, plus lots of rest and water. That's always our first go-to.
    xx

    1. Yes it was all pretty rush through. Even gave a repeat for the antibiotics. The joys of bulk billing. Completely oposite to the experience I had at a different surgery the following day. Mind you I was quite out of pocket for the experience. There will be a post soon I am sure ;)

  5. It drives me nuts how antibiotics are the answer to everything! I rarely take the kids to the doctors for coughs and colds but my little guy has asthma and is prone to ear infections so we find ourselves there often enough. I've learnt to trust my instinct though. Mum usually knows best after all!! I hope your girl is better soon & your back improves. Keep up with the chicken soup xx

  6. We find ourselves at the doctors fairly regularly but thankfully they only seem to give antibiotics when required. I hope things are now on the mend in your household Rhi!

  7. That's what annoys me, "It could be bacterial but it might only be viral, heck - I'll give you the antibiotics anyway shall I?" Antibiotics should never be for just incase, only if they are definite. I have a really good doctor who I don't hesitate to take my boys to because I know she only ever prescribes antibiotics if she is positive they are needed. She has a spiel she must give all parents when explaining why she is not prescribing antibiotics - I listened to it a few times on several different visits before one day saying to her, "You don't need to give me the spiel, it is why I bring my kids to you in the first place!"

    1. How wonderful to have a doctor you are so comfortable with. Good doctors are hard to find here sometimes due to the transient nature of the population. Being a local in a place where people come and go is super tough sometimes. You no sooner develop that great relationship and they decide it is time to leave.
